Engineering, Construction & Infrastructure Project of the Year Award
The winner for this category has now been announced. Congratulations to all our finalists in this category.
Recognising and rewarding excellence in projects that deliver physical assets including infrastructure, transport and energy.
Our highly sought-after Project of the Year categories are designed to recognise project excellence, both in delivery and outcomes. There are four Project of the Year Award categories, representing different types of projects. The winners of each of these awards are entered into the prestigious overall project of the year category, of which there is one winner.
The Engineering, Construction and Infrastructure Project of the Year Award is given to the team whose project demonstrates the most effective use of project management and the greatest benefits and outcomes to end users in engineering, construction and infrastructure projects of any scale across all sectors.
We require entrants to all Project of the Year Categories to produce a submission of 1,500-2,500 words (in English) based on the judging criteria for that category. Entrants may also submit up to four pieces of supporting evidence - images or graphics only (no text apart from captions). Evidence must support information already included in the submission and must not introduce additional elements. Please see further details on the ‘Supporting evidence’ tab of the Awards platform. Video and audio is not accepted as part of the submission.
The Engineering, Construction and Infrastructure Project of the Year category is a two-stage judging category, the first stage being the written submission mentioned above and the second stage requires all finalists to present virtually to a panel of judges. Projects from all sectors, and from across the globe, may apply.
Shell’s second dairy-to-renewable natural gas (RNG) project, Bovarius, is part of a programme to build a new, sustainable, circular business.
RNG has a lower life-cycle carbon intensity than traditional natural gas and its lifecycle creates a circular economy while reducing harmful emissions in dairy farm operations.
The Bovarius project was completed ahead of schedule, under budget, exceeding production plans, and with excellent safety. The team’s efforts helped exceed project goals and demonstrated that innovation and collaboration are key to developing the business models and fuels of the future, to deliver more value for society and shareholders with fewer emissions.
Judges comments
A fascinating environmental project - and an opportunity to utilize core project skills in an entirely new environment. Shell has a particularly rigorous approach to project management, and the programme was faced with specific challenges when new stakeholders and physical areas were engaged: nevertheless, the project has already shown clear benefits in both the short and long term, with a committed team that will continue to bring learnings to future projects.

Judges Special Mention | Port of Aberdeen South Harbour - Turner & Townsend and Port of Aberdeen
As the UK’s oldest company, Port of Aberdeen Board embarked on this ambitious development to increase capacity, facilitate larger vessels and to unlock further opportunities to new markets.
This £400m investment, funded by City Deal, Scottish National Infrastructure Bank and others, was the largest marine infrastructure project underway in the UK and is the largest in Trust Port history.
Turner & Townsend were appointed to deliver on a number of our recommendations and embed a team of experts to put in place robust project controls and reporting for the remainder of the project.

Finalist | Heathrow Cargo Tunnel Refurbishment Project - Heathrow Airport Ltd
The Heathrow Cargo Tunnel Refurbishment has been likened to “performing open heart surgery on a live patient”.
One of the largest individual projects in Heathrow’s capital plan, it has a uniquely challenging operational environment combined with security clearance requirements for all labour, plant and materials.
Launched in 2018, the overarching project objective is to reduce operational and business risk and it has focused on collaboration, digital transformation, and adopting Modern Methods of Construction. It has now reached a critical stage and a “Team Heathrow” approach has consistently ensured that decisions have been made in the best interests of the project.
Finalist | Hope Valley Railway Upgrade - Network Rail and Turner & Townsend
Network Rail, supported by Turner & Townsend have completed a £150m upgrade to rail infrastructure in the Hope Valley between Manchester and Sheffield.
Over three years the team worked collaboratively in challenging circumstances to deliver a raft of different infrastructure upgrades whilst also ensuring key stakeholders were engaged and supportive and environmental improvements were made.
Finalist | Sellafield Electrical Resilience Project - Sellafield Ltd
Constructed in the 1940s to support the UK defence programme, Sellafield continues to be a leader in the nuclear industry, employing 11,000 people, with a 100-year mission ahead, and supporting 3/5 local jobs. Building a strong talent pool is critical to “creating a clean and safe environment for future generations”.
The ‘Electrical Distribution Substation Replacement Project’ was initiated to deliver extensive E&I infrastructure upgrades, involving installation and commissioning of 43,000 metres (27 miles) of cable across the most congested, high-risk areas of a site that houses the most diverse range of nuclear facilities in a single place anywhere in the world.
