Applying a structured approach to project outcomes to increase their chances of success webinar

This was a joint webinar broadcast on Thursday 7 September, between the APM People SIG and Association for NLP.

The project environment is all about creating change from something to something else. There is always an expected outcome or outcomes. Sometimes these are defined at the start and sometimes they can change in a more agile way during a project’s lifetime. What is important is that outcomes are considered in a way that is structured and sustainable throughout the project lifetime.

In discussion with two experts in their fields (healthcare delivery and major rail infrastructure) this webinar explored how to make project outcomes more effective and ‘ecological’ in the sense of not threatening other aspects of the project or organisation by setting targets that cannot be delivered without major disruption.

A model they discussed in this webinar is the well-formedness characteristics for any outcome, as proposed in Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP), which are that it is:

• Stated in the positive
• Defined using sensory-based evidence (measurable)
• Initiated and maintained by those who want the outcome
• Preserving the positive by-products of the present state
• Appropriately contextualised to surrounding ecology

Our expert panel shared their experience of setting and achieving outcomes, and how to avoid pitfalls.

Speakers

Kim Kapur
From an early career in Telecommunications project management, Kim Kapur made the transition into the rail industry in 2003 working for Fluor Daniel on the London Underground Connect Radio project. Here Kim experienced her first taste of delivery in rail and hasn’t looked back!

Kim held several senior P3M roles on the Crossrail Programme, including successfully bringing into use five of the new central stations, Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road, Farringdon, Liverpool Street and Whitechapel. Finally, as Delivery Director, Kim oversaw the final commissioning stage of the Elizabeth Line and Close Out of the Crossrail Programme.

Recently, Kim joined HS2 as Stations Client Director in April 2023 and is responsible for delivering three of the Phase One stations, Old Oak Common, Interchange and Birmingham Curzon Street.

Kim’s ethos and approach to delivery is to simplify complexity, apply a sense of pragmatism and practicality to decision making and to keep moving forwards, always focusing on the overall objective.

 

Michael Dunlop
With an academic background in Management, Corporate Governance, Psychology and Neuroscience, Michael Dunlop is an International Ambassador and the Specialist Envoy for Government for the ANLP and is a frequent writer in this field. He is currently the CEO of Power of Choice Ltd and an award-winning NLP Trainer and Master Practitioner.

He is a Visiting Lecturer at Ulster University Business School; An Associate Consultant and Partner for The Northern Ireland Chief Executives' Forum and The Health & Social Care Leadership Centre and has worked with some of Northern Ireland & Ireland’s most recognisable organisations.

His work with the Northern Ireland Chief Executive’s Forum supports senior public service leaders in dealing effectively with the realities and challenges of leadership within systems often resistant to change.

In partnership with the Northern Ireland Social Care Council, Michael’s team created an award-winning online Resilience & Wellbeing Resource to support the Social Care Workforce during the Pandemic.

 

Host

Tim Lyons
With a background in projects spanning more than 40 years, Tim Lyons has worked as a project consultant specialising in the outcome-focused delivery of large, complex, multi-disciplinary programmes for clients including Crossrail (Elizabeth Line), Network Rail, ExxonMobil, Siemens and in the IP development sector.

His first career was in broadcasting, where he designed and built commercial radio station studio complexes in Manchester, Cardiff and Bristol, latterly working behind the microphone as a presenter and programme producer for the UK’s first regular radio show about IT and the computer revolution in the 1980s.

Tim now writes and presents extensively on matters relating to the human and neurological aspects of projects, including communication, ethics and coaching. He holds a Master’s degree in NLP and Coaching and is an NLP Master Practitioner and International Coach.
